Children's Dentistry

In most cases, Orono Dental Care is able to see children of all ages from in and around the Lake Minnetonka Area here in our office. Depending on your child's treatment needs, we do work closely with local pediatric dentists when necessary.

Depending on your child's age, the first visit is typically all about familiarizing your child with the dental office. We want this visit to be fun for your child and informative for you! We will review important information on caring for your child's mouth, do an exam to check for developmental concerns and cavities, and make it a positive experience that we can build upon at future office visits for your child. We recommend scheduling your child's first visit around age 1.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, your child should have their first dental visit by the age of one. By this age, your child will have several teeth and it is a good time for us to help them grow familiar with the sights and sounds in the dental office.

Your child’s first dental visit is a milestone! We will make it a very fun and special event. You can take pictures as we give your child a ride in the dental chair. We will encourage your little one to think of their dental visits as a fun, positive experience.

This is also a great time to discuss oral care with parents. Your child’s teeth require regular maintenance, just like yours! Brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits can create the foundation for a lifetime of good oral health.

Baby teeth are important. They provide guidance for permanent teeth and play a role in determining your child’s bite and function in the future. We will talk about ways to preserve them including healthy nutrition, and when to address certain habits such as bottle use and thumb sucking.

We believe in creating a partnership with parents that helps maintain and preserve the smiles of our littlest patients.

Comprehensive Family Dentistry

Dental insurance can be expensive and may not provide as much coverage as you expected! It has not stayed current with today’s dental needs and fees, rarely providing 100% coverage at the level of quality that you expect. Yearly maximums can be limiting if you expect your insurance to cover all of the treatment you need or want.

Oftentimes, insurance providers impose waiting periods and limitations that are not appealing and dictate treatment such as amalgam fillings instead of composite or place limitations on how often you receive restorations – even if you need them!

Some of our patients do not have access to dental insurance through their employers or have opted to work with us on our guaranteed savings plan instead because it offers greater flexibility and freedom in the treatment you choose. After all, your dentistry is a decision that should be made between you and your dentist!

We offer an in-office dental savings plan for patients without insurance. Upon enrollment to our office Save & Smile discount plan patients receive two regular hygiene visits at no cost and then 15% courtesy on other dental treatment. (See plan for details and limitations.)

We will get to know each other and decide if it's a good mutual fit. We provide time for you to share any changes or concerns you have about your oral health and to discuss any questions you may have.

We believe that knowledge is power and it is our goal to give you accurate information about your oral health so that you can make a decision that works for you about how to proceed with future preventive care, restorative care, and tooth replacement, if necessary.

At your initial exam, you will receive a comprehensive evaluation of your teeth and gums. We will perform a periodontal evaluation so that we can give you the type of dental cleaning that will best support your health. We will also take diagnostic digital x-rays in order to identify any areas of decay or infection. We take a full medical history at your appointment so that we know about any other health challenges you may be having that can affect your oral health.

We will provide a personalized dental cleaning based on your needs and talk to you about a re-care schedule that makes sense for you so that you can maintain a healthy, comfortable smile!

One of the things we are most proud of here at Orono Dental Care is the level of experience and training achieved by our dentists. Children’s dentistry – We value the relationships we develop with the families in our community, so naturally we want to welcome patients of all ages to our office for treatment. Our littlest patients receive gentle, conscientious care at Orono Dental Care that gives them a great head start on a healthy smile.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Depending on the severity of the damage to the teeth, there are several cosmetic options that might be available to you. If the chips are relatively small, we may be able to smooth the chipped areas or repair the damage with tooth-colored fillings. For more extensive concerns, veneers or ceramic crowns may be a better option for a beautiful and long-lasting smile.

1. Express one continuous bead of gel approximately 1/3 to 1/2 of the syringe.

2. Brush teeth before whitening. Place tray over teeth. Gently press tray to move gel into place. Pressing too firmly will force gel out of tray. Wear times will vary (see below).

3. Remove excess gel from gums using a soft toothbrush.

4. Clean tray with soft brush and warm water. Store tray in the case that came with your kit.

Here is a link to a step by step video.

Wear times vary depending on the strength of the whitening gel you use:

Opalescence 10% for 8–10 hours or overnight

Opalescence 15% for 4–6 hours

Opalescence 20% for 2–4 hours

Opalescence 35% for 30 minutes

ZOOM! Whitening

This whitening procedure takes place in our office in one 2-hour appointment. Philips Zoom Blue LED light-accelerated technology and gel whitens rapidly while Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP) helps deliver enamel protection, improve luster and reduce sensitivity. As part of the appointment, you will be given some whitening gel to take home for touch-ups and fitted for custom whitening trays to use at home. These take-home trays and the gel is included at no additional charge. In general, patients see results of up to eight shades whiter.

Custom Whitening Trays (At Home Use)

Another option is to be fitted for custom whitening trays that you can use at home. The trays are reusable. You will only spend about 30-40 minutes in our office for the fitting, then whiten at home. This option offers convenient wear times as short as 15 minutes per day, or as long as overnight. The gel formula contains potassium nitrate and fluoride for added benefit, and decreased sensitivity. Each syringe generally lasts around 2-3 applications.

Disposable Trays (At Home Use)

No impressions are required; it is ready to use right out of the box. The whitening is 15% hydrogen peroxide that is worn for 15-20 minutes a day. The whitening formula contains potassium nitrate and fluoride for added benefit and to decrease sensitivity.

We offer many cosmetic dental treatments! From bonding to teeth whitening, we can help you create the perfect smile you've always dreamed about.

Bonding:

Your dentist uses a white resin material that bonds with your natural tooth structure. Bonding can be done to help close gaps, to make teeth more uniform by changing the shape or length, or fixing chipped or broken areas.

Whitening:

We offer a few choices for whitening your teeth. The first is professional strength whitening strips that you use at home. These come pre-packaged in a set of ten for your upper and lower teeth. The strips adhere to your teeth and the whitening gel clings to your teeth until you remove the strips. They are easy to apply and wear and you can speak normally when you wear them.

We also offer whitening trays and gel to use at home. To start, you will come in for an impression and we use this impression to create a custom whitening tray for you. At home, you will apply a small amount of the professional strength whitening gel to the inside of your teeth tray and wear for the instructed amount of time. The whitening gel is stronger than the gel that comes on the take-home strips, and the trays can be used over and over again so you're free to do touch-ups over time. The tubes of gel you use inside of the trays will last for several applications and are very affordable to purchase when you need refills.

The last whitening option we offer is Zoom Whitening by Philips. Zoom is the in-office whitening option that uses whitening gel that is activated by an LED light applied to the gel while it is on your teeth. The entire whitening session takes about two hours. You will be given a take-home touch-up whitening kit to take with you as well.

Veneers:

Veneers are a way to change the shade or shape of your teeth without damaging too much of the natural tooth structure. A veneer is a thin piece of porcelain or resin that is cemented to the front of your natural tooth.

Dental Crowns:

Crowns can be used to treat tooth decay, but can also be used as a cosmetic service. The natural tooth is reduced and a crown is placed over the entire existing natural tooth. We are proud to offer CEREC same-day crowns at Orono Dental Care. A simple digital impression is taken, then sit back and relax and receive your custom-made crown at the same visit.

Dental Implants:

Missing teeth can be unsightly, and can also cause problems with your bite and your ability to chew. Dental implants are the best option to replace most missing teeth. A dental implant does not interfere with any neighboring teeth, and helps to maintain bone levels in the area where the natural tooth was missing. Keeping healthy bone level is crucial for keeping the rest of your teeth healthy. The finished dental implant looks like and functions like a natural tooth.

Great question! There are thousands of different insurance benefit plans out there, and each of them are different. Generally dental insurance will benefit dental work that restores function or treats decay (cavities). That said, each case and each insurance is unique. The best course of action to ask us to submit a pre-treatment authorization request for you. By doing so, you will know what your benefits and out-of-pocket cost are before you schedule the treatment.

Dental Implants

While bridges do have clinical indications, in most cases implants are the most optimal choice for replacing a missing tooth.  Some of the benefits of dental implants are no need to cut down additional teeth, you can floss between the teeth, you cannot get a cavity on an implant, and higher long-term success rates.

Dental implants allow you to replace missing teeth in a safe and predictable way.  The Biocompatibility of dental implants allows the implants to integrate seamlessly and the resulting tooth will feel extremely natural.

Missing teeth can cause problems with your health and appearance. When you have missing teeth, you may be limited in the foods you can eat, suffer from shifting teeth, and feel self-conscious about your smile. At Orono Dental Care, we offer a number of solutions to restore your appearance and your bite.

Fixed dental bridge – A pair of specialized dental crowns suspend an artificial tooth to fill the gap in your smile. The artificial tooth acts as a placeholder, but does not protect against bone loss associated with tooth loss.

Partial denture – When you have multiple missing teeth and want to replace a number of them, but cannot have or do not want dental implants, partial dentures offer a reliable alternative. We match your partial denture to your natural teeth so your smile appears seamless.

Complete dentures – We use complete dentures to replace all of your teeth on your upper or lower arch.

Dental implants – Dental implants are the best way to replace missing teeth and retain valuable bone, function, and the integrity of your bite. Dental implants can work individually to replace one or more missing teeth and can also work with dentures to provide extra support and stability.

Once a tooth is missing, the bone that used to support that tooth begins to erode away. Additionally, the teeth adjacent and opposing the missing tooth can begin to move. Typically, the tooth behind the missing one will begin to tip forward into the space that used to be occupied by the missing tooth. This can lead to difficult-to-clean pockets around the adjacent teeth and further complicate future tooth replacement. The opposing teeth can also begin to migrate -- they search for a tooth to chew against. This can negatively impact the harmony of the biting surfaces when chewing and lead to interferences with a normal bite.

Call Orono Dental Care today to learn more about tooth replacement and dental implants.

Implant restorations will mimic a natural tooth both functionally and esthetically and should feel and look like a natural tooth.
